How do you want to retire?

There’s this ad where a guy shoves papers off his desk and moonwalks out the office with surprised looks from colleagues wearing party hats for his retirement. That won’t be me, I can’t picture happy and retired together.

I don’t want to work forever and certainly not for others but I don’t want to be at the end of my active phase which has given me freedom and independence.

If I retired tomorrow what would I do with my free time? When I had no work all my days blended into each other. I only value my spare time because of work. In other words, I don’t want to retire soon. I want to retire when life feels too full to work, when I don’t think of finances anymore.

Jane Fonda at eighty seven says she still needs to work to support others. That won’t be me. I want to be old and cranky and publish a bestseller and live off royalties. One can dream…
